Some time ago, I came across this little gadget in the small engine shed at Lake Goldsmith, amongst a very nice collection of all sorts of small combustion engines. 

This gadget fascinated me and so, as I was taking photos of it, I started discussing it with a few other people that were also looking around. Before I knew it there were half a dozen of us, wondering what it was, but not one of us had an answer.
