During my travels to the NHMA in March this year, I happened to drive past this Windmill near Geelong, Vic, which impressively is one of the largest working windmills of its type in the area.
Its features are -
Type: Southern Cross Windmill
Model Number RH
Serial Number 85154
Build Date: 1948
Direct Acting Fan:
Wheel 25 feet (7.6 metres) in diameter
Tower 55 feet (17 metres) high
Life - 600 feet
The windmill was originally located on the banks of the Barwon River (next to the Geelong Ring Road and supplied water for farm use to the property called Highview, owned by the McCann family. The mill was donated by Vic Roads and their contractor (Abigroup) in 2008 to the Royal Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society after an extensive restoration including new bearings, re-galvanised and painted steelwork, new blades and tail rim, a rebuilt pump and new woodwork, and of course this was all done with the assistance of the Vintage Machinery members.
I noticed the International Harvesters Club of Australia club rooms near by. Are these the club members responsible for the restoration?
I would like to say well done on the restoration to all those involved, and I would love to read more about this if any members or others have photos and information to send in.
I look forward to reading more about this in the future.
Rob.
