In the late 1960s the AMP Society and CSR acquired a large land parcel of primarily bushland between the Karuah River and Bulahdelah on the NSW Mid-North Coast and started work to clear it for cattle production. Soon after clearing started, a service station proprietor, Don Legge from Bulahdelah, contacted the manager of the AMP project about obtaining contract work ploughing the newly cleared land.
AMP quickly took up Don Legge’s offer.
Don joined with Peter Jenkins and formed a company, Jenkins & Legge Pty Ltd which purchased a new Massey Ferguson 60hp crawler tractor and an 8ft Towner Armstrong off-set disc plough and started ploughing. It soon became apparent crawler tractors were too slow and costly.
