The Gayndah Steam Sawmill
3 min read

The town of Gayndah is situated on the Burnett River, 320 kilometres northwest of Brisbane and 150 kilometres west of Maryborough, Queensland. The region is mainly noted for citrus fruit production, and the Gayndah Orange Festival, held every two years. The Gayndah Historical Museum’s collection of archives, memorabilia and machinery is housed in several historical buildings, including the former Gayndah Sawmill, which was relocated to the site several years ago.

The old sawmill now contains a varied collection of steam engines, as well as a steam-driven sawmill. Every two months the Museum stages a steam day where local residents and visitors can watch the sawmill in action. The Museum uses timber sawn on these occasions to extend the sheds that house its large collection of farming, industrial and military vehicles.

Sawmilling can be a dangerous business. Many readers might remember former
