In February, 2006 we conducted another of our bi-annual reaping demonstrations at Rusty Park, Saddleworth, South Australia. This time we had more emphasis on hay-making as well as reaping.
Devon Amber brought his Sunshine binder and Fordson tractor over in November, and with Steve Howell’s help, we cut some of the crop into sheaves. Even though it was over forty years since Devon or I had used a binder, it seemed like only yesterday when the usual gremlins crept in. Missed knots, slipping canvasses and poorly placed strings had us testing the memory! However, all was soon running smoothly, and it was a pleasure to see and smell the fresh hay. Luckily, we hadn’t forgotten the dull task of stooking or carting sheaves, so we stopped before we cut the whole crop.
