Lives of the Engineers Four Melbourne Engineers

The Hampson & Halliday Footscray Ironworks in the 1890s. In the yard beneath two substantial stiff-leg derricks are a set of locomotive driving wheels, two partially-completed tunnelling shields, a horizontal steam engine (in for repairs) and, on the extreme right, what appears to be the frame for one of the firm’s steam cranes. Following the gold rushes Melbourne was well-supplied with small engineering workshops, mostly sited on the outskirts of the city and in South Melbourne. In this instalment of Lives of the Engineers we will examine the history of four small Melbourne engineering companies which set up shop north and west of Melbourne producing a diverse range of products.
