Draper’s Windmill Gas Engine Reaches 100 years Old!
3 min read

Drapers’ windmill at Margate, East Kent, UK, is the only working smock mill in Margate. It was built in 1850 by local master millwright, John Holman of Canterbury, but no-one knows who owned this mill up until Mr Holman’s passing in 1855.

The historic windmill will be on display during the National Mills weekend from Saturday, 9th May until Sunday, 10th 2020, where it is expected that windmill enthusiasts and other interested persons will visit. It is also expected that engine men will attend as the mill will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of its 1920 town gas engine. The gas engine will be in working order, driving the mill’s stones. If the wind is available, the sweeps will be in use, and will turn the mill stones as well as the other machinery installed in the windmill to produce flour.
